Biography

American bass-baritone Michael Sumuel returns to The Metropolitan Opera in the 2023–24 season as performing Reginald in Anthony Davis’s X, The Life and Times of Malcolm X. He also sings Sharpless in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly with Houston Grand Opera, Forester in Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen, Handel’s Messiah with the San Francisco Symphony, J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with Les Violons du Roy, the Mozart Requiem and Bach’s Magnificat with Music of the Baroque and Jane Glover, the Fauré Requiem with the National Symphony Orchestra, and Jesus in Bach’s St. John Passion with the Seattle Symphony. In the 2022–23 season, Sumuel made his Met principal debut, singing Belcore in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore. Other debuts included Elviro in Handel’s Serse with Detroit Opera, and Figaro in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro with Pittsburgh Opera. Sumuel’s concert appearances have included the Mozart Requiem with the Cincinnati Symphony and James Conlon, Bach cantatas with Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society  and with Pacific Chorale, and a European tour performing in Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass and Florence Price’s Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight

Highlights of recent seasons include Jesus in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with Los Angeles Opera, a semi-staged production conducted by James Conlon with choreography by the Hamburg Ballet. He was also Figaro in The Marriage Figaro with Seattle Opera and Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen in his Santa Fe Opera debut. He returned to the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall to sing Mozart’s Mass in C minor with Zubin Mehta, performed Bach’s Easter Oratorio with Music of the Baroque, and the Mozart Requiem with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.
