Patricia Kopatchinskaja

Violin

Biography

With a combination of depth, brilliance, and humor, Patricia Kopatchinskaja delves into music’s core, exploring its meaning in the here and now, which could involve an unconventional performance of a traditional violin classic or a theatrical project where she serves as an experimental performance dramaturge. Kopatchinskaja is celebrated for her boundary-crossing approach. Her primary focus lies in 20th and 21st-century music, and she has collaborated with Luca Francesconi, Michael Hersch, György Kurtág, Márton Illés, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. Kopatchinskaja conducts staged concerts on both sides of the Atlantic, and collaborates with leading orchestras, conductors, and festivals worldwide.

In the 2023–24 season she brings her creative potential and versatility to residencies at the Southbank Centre in London, Vienna Konzerthaus, and Philharmonie Essen. She is an associated artist of the SWR Experimental Studio, a prominent international electronic music research center. She toured with the London Symphony Orchestra and Antonio Pappano; performed with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Hannu Lintu and with Philharmonique de Strasbourg with Aziz Shokakimov; premiered Aureliano Cattaneo’s Violin Concerto; and reunited with her esteemed colleagues from Solistes de l’Ensemble Intercontemporain at the Philharmonie de Paris. She toured extensively in Germany with Sol Gabetta, presenting Sol & Pat on Alpha Classics, an album that celebrates more than 20 years of musical camaraderie and a genuine friendship.

Kopatchinskaja’s discography comprises more than 30 recordings, including her Grammy-winning recording of Schubert’s Death and the Maiden with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, reissued in a semi-staged filmed performance with Camerata Bern on HarrisonParrott’s digital platform Virtual Circle. Recent releases include Les Plaisirs illumines, with Sol Gabetta and Camerata Bern, and Le Monde selon George Antheil, with Joonas Ahonen (both on Alpha Classics).
