Daniele Rustioni

Daniele Rustioni is one of the most compelling conductors of his generation. In 2022, he was named International Opera Awards’ Best Conductor of the Year. Music director of Opéra national de Lyon since September 2017, he became music director of the Ulster Orchestra in 2022–23 after three seasons as that ensemble’s chief conductor. In September 2021 he became principal guest conductor of the Bavarian Staatsoper. Between 2014 and 2020 he was music director of the Orchestra della Toscana.

Rustioni has conducted many leading international orchestras and all of the major Italian symphonies, including the Accademia nazionale di Santa Cecilia Orchestra and the Filarmonica della Scala. In recent seasons he made debuts with The Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the MET Orchestra at New York’s Carnegie Hall, an honor usually reserved for the music director of The Metropolitan Opera. His 2023–24 highlights includes appearances with the BBC Symphony, City of Birmingham Symphony, Hallé, and Swedish Radio Symphony orchestras.

As music director of Opéra national de Lyon, Rustioni conducts two new productions each season as well as symphonic programs. He and the opera house are regular guests at the Paris’s Théâtre des Champs-Elysées and the Aix-en-Provence Festival, where they present operas on stage as well as in concert. In the summer of 2024 he leads a new production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly in Aix.

Rustioni is a frequent guest of the major international opera houses, including the Berlin Staatsoper, Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, Opéra Bastille, London’s Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Madrid’s Teatro Real, and Zurich Opera House. In 2022 he made his Salzburg Festival debut in 2022 and brought the Ulster Orchestra to the BBC Proms.

A regular presence at The Met since his debut in 2017 with Verdi’s Aida, Daniele Rustioni has led Verdi’s Falstaff and Rigoletto and Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. He conducted a new production of Bizet’s Carmen during the New Year’s Eve Gala on December 31, 2023.

Rustioni’s discography includes an album of underappreciated Italian composers for Sony Classical, Bellini’s Adelson e Salvini for Opera Rara, and Wolf-Ferrari’s Violin Concerto with Francesca Dego on Deutsche Grammophon. The audio-visual recording of his acclaimed performance with Opéra national de Lyon of Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel is available on Naxos.
