Conrad Tao

Conrad Tao has appeared worldwide as a pianist and composer. Born in Urbana, Illinois, in 1994, he is the recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant and was named a Gilmore Young Artist — an honor, awarded every two years, highlighting the most promising American pianists of the new generation. As a composer, he received a 2019 New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Award for Outstanding Sound Design / Music Composition for his work on More Forever, his collaboration with dancer and choreographer Caleb Teicher.

Tao has appeared as soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Cleveland Orchestra, and Boston Symphony Orchestra, in addition to the New York Philharmonic. His compositions have been performed by orchestras throughout the US; the New York Philharmonic commissioned and premiered his first large-scale orchestral work, Everything Must Go, in September 2018, and the work was premiered in Europe by the Antwerp Symphony in the 2021–22 season. His violin concerto, written for Stefan Jackiw, was premiered by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Robert Spano and performed by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Kirill Karabits. Tao’s 2021–22 recital appearances included his London solo recital debut, at Wigmore Hall, and performances throughout North America.

In his first collaboration with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, in the fall of 2022, Tao curated and led music by Ruth Crawford Seeger, Gesualdo, C.P.E. Bach, Feldman, and Mozart. Upcoming collaborations include ongoing performances of Counterpoint with dancer Caleb Teicher and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with Orchestra of St Luke’s as part of Paul Taylor Dance Company’s season at Lincoln Center. The current season also includes a multicity tour with the Junction Trio, which includes the group’s Celebrity Series of Boston debut, as well as performances in New York City, San Francisco, Washington, DC, and more.

Conrad Tao is a Warner Classics recording artist. His debut disc, Voyages, and his second album, Pictures (featuring works by David Lang, Takemitsu, Carter, Musorgsky, and Tao himself), were met with critical acclaim. His third album, American Rage, featuring works by Julia Wolfe, Rzewski, and Copland, was released in 2019.
