PHOTOS: 2019 Lunar New Year Concert and Gala

The New York Philharmonic welcomed the Year of the Pig at the eighth annual Lunar New Year Concert and Gala, a festive fire-themed evening — representing warmth, light, energy, and prosperity — presented by Starr International Foundation. Kahchun Wong made his Philharmonic debut conducting the program, which included the US Premiere of a new violin concerto by Oscar winner Tan Dun, Stravinsky’s The Firebird, music by Mozart, Shin Arirang, and more. Gala guests began the evening with a colorful cocktail reception and gathered after the concert for a dinner of Lunar New Year delicacies.

A short time ago, in a concert hall not far away … The New York Philharmonic threw its 2016 Spring Gala, A John Williams Celebration, last night, fêting the Oscar-winning composer's contributions to movie music with stellar performances of his scores. After a buzzing cocktail reception, David Newman led the Orchestra in beloved music from Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, Jaws, Schindler’s List, and more, along with clips from select films. The fun, festive evening concluded with a glamorous dinner.

Chinese New Year Concert and Gala Slideshow

On February 9 the New York Philharmonic welcomed the Year of the Monkey at the fifth-annual Chinese New Year Concert and Gala. Philharmonic benefactors, friends, and even United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon gathered for a cocktail reception, festive dinner, and the concert itself — featuring Principal Harp Nancy Allen in the New York Premiere of Oscar winner Tan Dun's Nu Shu: The Secret Songs of Women plus violinist Maxim Vengerov with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Long Yu. Celebrating 50 Years of Concerts in the Parks — the New York Philharmonic’s Spring Gala — feted the beloved series with a lively concert of favorites, MLB Hall of Famer Joe Torre narrating Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, and projections of archival videos and photos. Guests arrived for the pre-concert reception on a fabulous "green" carpet, and the post-concert dinner honored Philharmonic Chairman Oscar Schafer and his wife, Didi, for their generosity and dedication in presenting the Concerts in the Parks since 2007.

On February 24 the New York Philharmonic welcomed the Year of the Sheep at its fourth-annual Chinese New Year Concert and Gala. Philharmonic supporters gathered for a cocktail reception, dinner, and the concert itself — spotlighting cello virtuoso Yo-Yo Ma, sheng master Wu Tong, vocalist Lei Jia, and ghijak player Gulinaer Yiming with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Long Yu. SLIDESHOW: A Glamorous Opening Gala

The New York Philharmonic launched its 2014–15 season last night! Following a glittering pre-concert reception, the Opening Gala centered on La Dolce Vita: The Music of Italian Cinema, in which Music Director Alan Gilbert and the Orchestra were joined by a starry array of artists — Joshua Bell, Renée Fleming, and Josh Groban plus Martin Scorsese and Alec Baldwin. Afterward, the Gala audience crossed the Lincoln Center Plaza for a post-concert dinner in the David H. Koch Theater.
