First Violin Kuan Cheng Lu Welcomes History’s Cutest Baby

On January 14, Philharmonic First Violin Kuan Cheng Lu and his wife, Grace Cheng, welcomed a baby girl, Madeline Lu.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the name arose musically, Kuan Cheng Lu explained in an e-mail:

One day I was just doing some house chores, and I was doodling (singing?) with some random sound and rhythm, something like da da la, ma da la. I surprised myself by noticing a familiar sound of word, Madeline!

I ran to the kitchen to my wife immediately and told her, This might be it: Madeline! She replied, 'Oh, that's one of my favorite French petite cake (Madeleine)!' As I googled the word, I realized I had some faint memory of the children's books by Ludwig Bemelmans, and even watched the film version of it long time ago. I watched the film again with Grace, and we both adore the smallest girl (Madeline) in the film!

We are really enjoying this new chapter of our lives, despite very few hours of sleep each night. Holding her and comforting her is such a heartwarming and settling feeling.
