Alan Gilbert Dedicates Concert to Claudio Abbado

Posted January 23, 2014

Leonard Bernstein and Claudio Abbado

Music Director Alan Gilbert took the stage before last night's concert featuring conductor Andrey Boreyko to say a few words in honor of Claudio Abbado. Here is what he said:

We at the Philharmonic would like to pay tribute to Claudio Abbado, who died on Monday. The world has lost a true giant: a musician, a man, who touched everybody who was fortunate enough to hear him perform and to experience the generosity of his spirit.

The New York Philharmonic, all the musicians, Maestro Boreyko, and I would like to dedicate this performance to his memory.

Mr. Abbado conducted the Philharmonic in 41 concerts between 1963 and 1979. The photo shows him with Leonard Bernstein in 1963.
