Introducing Alan Gilbert: A Study
Musorgsky's masterpiece is a fitting finale to a concert that includes Stucky's shimmering Son et lumière (Sound and Light) and Joyce DiDonato ("the best singing I've heard in years" – Financial Times) in Berlioz's romantic Les Nuits d'été (Summer Nights).
The Modern Beethoven Festival opens with two of Beethoven's most exuberant and joyous symphonies, plus Stravinsky's smile-inducing Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra with soloist Peter Serkin.
David Zinman leads Beethoven's compact, energetic Eighth and the sunny Fourth. "Absolutely stunning" (Classic FM) Alisa Weilerstein is the soloist in Barber's lyrical Cello Concerto.
In the finale to our Beethoven festival, David Zinman leads the Philharmonic in a pair of Beethoven's symphonies, and violin soloist Gil Shaham performs Hartmann's poignant Concerto funèbre.
"Dohnányi unleashed the orchestra like a tidal wave." (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)
Music Director Alan Gilbert conducts the New York Philharmonic at London's Barbican Centre for the final concerts of the EUROPE / WINTER 2012 tour.
