Winter US Tour 2009

About the Tour

Lorin Maazel is traveling with the New York Philharmonic for the last time as the Orchestra’s Music Director. The Winter U.S. Tour 2009, February 21–March 9, 2009, also marks the first Philharmonic American tour under the aegis of Global Sponsor Credit Suisse. The Orchestra will perform in 11 halls in 10 cities on a tour that spans the sunny South and the wintery Midwest.

February 19–22: New York–West Palm Beach

The New York Philharmonic's final tour with Lorin Maazel as Music Director has begun, with a sunny start and enthusiastically received concerts in Atlanta and West Palm Beach. On video: an insider’s look on how the New York Philharmonic begins a tour.

On to Naples

February 23–24: Naples

The Orchestra performs for the first time in Naples, Florida, and then enjoys a much-needed day off in the sun. Sarasota

February 25–26: Naples–Sarasota–Miami

The Philharmonic's concerts continue, with performances in Sarasota and Miami, along with receptions, reunions, and some fun in the sun. On video: a variety of views of the Miami performance, including an encore: the Farandole from Bizet's L’Arlésienne Suite No. 2.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

February 27–March 1: Miami–San Juan, Puerto Rico

The Philharmonic concludes its Miami visit and travels to San Juan for two concerts as part of the Casals Festival and some free time to explore. On video: pre-rehearsal cacophony leads to a stirring run-through of Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1 with James Ehnes as soloist.

On to Naples

March 2–4: San Juan–Chapel Hill

Winter-weary musicians enjoy a free day in San Juan and then depart the tropics for Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and two concerts in Memorial Hall at the University of North Carolina. On video: two Philharmonic brass players share their knowledge through master classes.

March 5–8: Danville–Ann Arbor

After the Orchestra’s debut in Danville, Kentucky, the Philharmonic moves on to Ann Arbor, Michigan, for two concerts and a series of master classes as part of its residency at the University of Michigan. On video: Lorin Maazel receives an honor: the title of Kentucky Colonel.

Chicago

March 9: Chicago

Lorin Maazel and the Philharmonic travel to Chicago for the final concert on the Winter U.S. Tour 2009, Mr. Maazel's last as the Orchestra's Music Director and the Philharmonic's first American tour with Global Sponsor Credit Suisse.
